Feral Dogs Threaten Wildlife in Ladakh's High Himalayas

In the remote, high-altitude region of Ladakh, India, a silent ecological crisis is unfolding. Once revered as guardians and companions, feral dogs have multiplied exponentially, now roaming the rugged terrain in packs. These dogs, descendants of domesticated animals abandoned by nomadic herders and tourists, are preying on endangered wildlife and disrupting a delicate mountain ecosystem. The problem is particularly acute in the Hemis National Park, home to the rare snow leopard. Researchers have documented dogs attacking and killing blue sheep, a primary prey for snow leopards. This predation creates a deadly competition: as wild prey populations decline due to dog attacks, snow leopards are forced to turn to livestock, escalating human-wildlife conflict. Furthermore, these canines carry diseases such as rabies and canine distemper, which can be transmitted to wild carnivores like wolves and foxes, potentially causing devastating epidemics among vulnerable populations. Genetic studies confirm that these are not wild canids but village dogs that have gone feral, capable of interbreeding with wolves. Local communities and conservationists are struggling to manage the population. While culling is often proposed, it is controversial and difficult to implement effectively. Innovative solutions, such as vaccination programs and the construction of predator-proof corrugated enclosures for livestock, are being deployed. However, the sheer number of dogs and the vastness of the landscape make containment a formidable challenge. With the increase in tourism and infrastructure development bringing more unowned dogs to the region, the race is on to prevent permanent alteration of the Himalayan food web.
